To my mind there are 3 types of music that get called "R&B"
There is the African-American stuff that came out of Motown and Stax in the 60's - Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Issac Hayes, Chubby Checker type stuff - not Soul (which is slower) but the stuff that later turned into Funk. But I'd call that Rhythm and Blues since it's Blues music with strong Rhythm.
Then there is the awesome blues based rock music made by white guys in England trying to sound like black guys from Chicago. But thats really just Rock and Roll (Despite what The Who might want to call it).
And the last kind is the bullshit overproduced pop that is around today. And that stuff does indeed suck hairy dogs balls as you accurately note.
