Number 7.

S & A: Interstate Love Song - Stone Temple Pilots
A & D: Purple - 7th June 1994
N: American
M: Dean DeLeo (Guitar - America); Robert DeLeo (Bass - America); Eric Kretz (Drums - America); Scott Weiland (Vocals - America)
YouTube:

My Rant;

So this track spent 15 or weeks at the top of the charts but that in itself doesn't make it worthy of being on the list.

It's definitly rock, but what type of rock? In my research i have seen it called everything from grunge to classic rock and Alternative rock to Southern Rock. I would class anything off 'Tiny Music" as acid/psychodelic rock, but Purple is an alternative rock album and this track is, for my money a symbiote of alternative and southen rock.

All that aside, it was very radio friendly and still is. The lyrics smack of betrayl and giving up and once again this was super relevant at the time it was released. More than that, the music is hot diggity god damn brilliant and starts off soft and yearning, but soon powerfully bursts into the life that take you through the tale Weiland has to tell. Everything meshes together beautifully, but is southern and dirty all at the same time.

The raking guitar work makes the track work musically and it reminds me of being a carefree, yet angst ridden teenager

My Rant;

So with Far Behind and this track, we're well off the beaten track with regard to all the other bollocks 'top 100' lists i've seen on the net, but here we go.

I'm not going to say the 'N' word in this rant; but this is post grunge music at its very best. Sure FF moved into all sorts of different genres as they aged/developments, but this post grunge.

This really is a beautiful track with that elevates the whole way through.

I remeber listening the New Rock Zone with the Green Man on Radio Haurkai when this came out and they kept getting calls to play this song and Green Man (i went to his Xmas party one year, and they had as much Speights and Wild Turkey Bourbon as you could drink and Miss New Zealand there) called it the most beautiful rock song of all time and and I have to agree. If it was any more beautiful, it probably wouldn't be rock and that is the fine line trodden by the Foo's in this track.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME:

The weather was crap, and we had to drag three kids there, but yesterday we went to Real Groovy (record shop in the city) and I picked up some CDs that I have wanted for a while: (saved $20 with loyalty card too)

Help! - The Beatles - 1965
Goo - Sonic Youth - 1990
Houdini - Melvins - 1993
Green Mind - Dinsosaur Jnr - 1991

So I'm stuck in the 90's a wee bit, but I've to try new things here and there. I listened to Help! on the way home and other than the well known tracks of Help!, Ticket To Ride and Yesterday, there was not a lot of awesomeness to report. Good solid album, but it reminded me of Enema of the State by Blink 182 in that it had a few excellent tracks and bollocks in between.

I will find some time and report back on the other albums shortly.

Green Day / other band - Vector Arena - Auckland 2010
Foo Fighters / other band - Supertop Auckland 2005 - In Your Honor Tour

Snow Patrol / Iain Archer - Vector Arena 2007
Live / Stabbing Westward - North Shore Events Centre - 2001

OK Concerts:

The Police / Fergie - Western Springs (still haunted by memories of meatloaf (see below)
The Exponents - Whenuapai Airbase - 1998
Foo Fighters - Vector Arena - 2008
Tim Finn / Anika Moa - St James Theatre

Bad Concerts

Faith No More - Vector Arena - 2010 (horrible, i should have listened to the cd at the pub)
Live - St James Theatre (hideous, i should have stayed at show girls)
Meatloaf - Western Springs - fuck, there are no words to describe this disaster zone.....

Yes, i know there is no U2, well boo freaking hoo. Great band, but bono annoys me and i get frustrated by the hype, probably to my own detriment....

Number 5.

S & A: Far Behind - Candlebox
A & D: Candlebox; 20th  July 1993
N: American
M: Peter Klett (Lead Guitar - America); Bardi Martin (Bass Guitar - America); Kevin Martin (Vocals/Guitar - America); Scott Mercado (Drums - America)
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-LW6m0zX5A

My Rant;

We're off the road here, but:

Despite this being a Seattle, WA band, and most of the band except Scott Mercado (Ohio) being born in or around Seattle; and even the fact this track was released in '93 before grunge died, this is not a grunge song. It is far too beautiful to be grunge, far too well played (or perhaps 'correctly' played) instruments to be grunge. That's why it's alternative. It was Seattle rock at a time when record company's were signing up anyone in Seattle who owned a guitar and calling them grunge.

I love this track, it is my personal favourite song of all time (well it's in the top 5). Lyrically excellent, it calls to everyone who feels left out (song apparently about another rock stars herion death). I remember getting goose bumps hearing this song for the first time on the comp album 'The Trip 4.

Also as a teenager we did stoopid shit, and regretted it (maybe i didn't mean to treat you all so bad, but i did anyway). So for this this is another track that grabs youth and says, it's ok you know; this shit you're going through, we all do it.

The music between 2:53 and 3:33 is beyond awesome; beautiful and powerful.

S & A: London Calling - The Clash
A & D: London Calling; 14th December 1979

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4dL0lv72oM&feature=g-like&context=G23cb944ALTxopVgABAA

My Rant;

Now, the Clash were a Punk Band, but not really. Unlike other contemporary punk bands, these blokes could actually play, and this song and album show it big time. The other band related comment is the were called ' the only band that matters, and at the time, in punk, they probably were.

With lyrics inspired by a whole host of things, drugs, police and three mile island included, it was as socially relevant and as Smells Like Teen Spirit, but it didn't change the face of pop culture like 'Smells' did.

Still and all, a truly great song that rocks on many levels. the funny thing is that i couldn't tell you exactly why i rate it so highly. Alls i know is that it gets inside me and feels like punk rock (not my favourite rock genre) should feel.

I also know a dude who went to a Clash concert in the early 80's and it was the best concert he's ever been to, he said it was a time and a place that 'clashed' well.

I spoke to a guy the other day who bagged The Beatles saying that they were 1 semi talented guy (Lennon) and 3 guys lucky enough to know him.

So after i yelled at him a bit; i rattled off the stats and then he mentioned that he didn't like McCartney because he does an interesting thing with musicians who contribute to his projects. He pays them a set fee only and doesn't give them any royalties. Which can be seen to be a bit stingy but; if you are that famous (and supposedly talented) that you can get people to work with and not have to give them any more money, then fair play.

The more interesting point is: are the beatles a rock band or an early britpop band that have the odd rock song here and there?

I will ponder said question and come back to this point...

Number 3

S & A: Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
A & D: Nevermind; 10 September 1991
N: American
M: Kurt Cobain (Vocals/Electric Guitar - America); Dave Grohl (Drums - America); Krist Novoselic (Bass Guitar - America)
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTWKbfoikeg&ob=av3e

My Rant;

This is the song that changed popular culture and signified the death of heavy metal/ glam rock (esp GNR) between 1991-92. Can't say enough about this track; It burns from the first chord to the last 'A denial'.

It spoke to a generation, my generation, of the boredom and frustration we felt at life, but it didn't give a solution because that would have been trite, and Cobain and Co were definitely not that. The music itself was laid down twice so it is the powerful deep sound that invokes the moshing/headbanging that has nearly caused me to crash my car on numerous occasion (probably a good idea that my boss doesn't read this stuff)

One of the points that i feel make this a great song is that is hasn't been covered (to the best of my knowledge) because you can't do it justice.

Just a few things today.

Thanks to Shaun who was not only my first follower (sorry, that is a sucky word for it), but also made the first comment. He was also, other than my wife, my first friend on fb.

Not bad for a dude i hardly know.

Heard a new song today: Hit the ground (Superman) by The Big Pink. Quite liked it; check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9_xniHg8pc

I will leave you with a lyric courtesy of Stone Temple Pilots.

"I am I am I said I'm not myself,
but i'm not dead and I'm not for sale,
hold me closer, closer let me go,
let me be, just let me be"

Number 2.

I couldn't be bothered keeping up the CaPs ThInG so here we go:

S & A: (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones
A & D: We're Out Of Our Heads; 31st July 1965
N: English
M: Mick Jagger (Vocals - England); Brian Jones (Acoustic Guitar - England); Jack Nitsche (Tambourine, Piano - America); Keith Richards (Electric Guitar, Vocals - England ); Charlie Watts (Drums - England); Bill Wyman (Bass Guitar - England)
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSGdUT985P0

My rant;

Absolutely the best lyrics in the history of music. A rant about advertising and how it sucks and it is more relevant now than ever before with reality tv and extremely loud tv ads. The bit about the guy on the tv trying to sell washing powder, but he's not a man because he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me is lyrical genius (Or is it just so simple that it is genius??)

Of course musically is it simple, loud and madly effective, i relistened to the track earlier today and found myself screaming along with it. I CAN'T GET NOOOO; SATISFACTION.

I decided to flag banging on about the rock bands can release non rock songs scenario and focus on list

NuMbEr 1 (cool huh)

S (song) & A (artist): Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
A (album) & D (date): Released on A Night At The Opera; 2nd December 1975
N (nationality of band): English
M (members at release): John Deacon (Bass - England); Brian May (Guitar - England); Freddie Mercury (Vocals etc - Tanzania); Roger Taylor (Drums - England)
YouTube:

My rant;

I remember my grandfather giving me the Queen: Live at Wembley '86 Album when i was a kid. I opened the cd and saw this huuuge stadium packed out and the cool cartoons of the band.

I really liked the cd, both discs, especially the bad language in Freddies speech 'we're going to be together until we fucking well die'.

But this song, blew me away. It is mental, it is brilliant on every level.
Why is it number 1? Simple, i feel that everyone in the band meant what they were doing when they recorded it, even if you and and i have no clue what he is on about. It encapsulates rock music and the guitar riff is probably the best ever.

Especially cool is the fact that it does what is does with chorus and an opera bit. Incidentally, I prefer Bill and Ted to Wayne and Garth.

So the count is:

Bands:

1 - England

Countries:

3 - England
1 - Tanzania

Decade

1 - 70's

Year

1 - 1975

Genre:
1 - Glam Rock

and the next clue is:

RoCk On
Also got this email today from Vladimir

"Hello sunshine

First, I promises that I'm not going to tease you for your small willy. That's the fact we all know, and not your fault.

Second, I'm happy that you've finally admitted that "Rock" is just one branch of popular music or "Pop" as we all know it.

Third, oh yes, you and me can argue about it till rest of our lives.... I think that Rock has died more or less in early 80's. They've used  defibrillator in early 90' and gave another few years and after that is just sad, embarrassing story. Guys like FF and RHCP should do a big favour to the mankind if they stop releasing new material and just go on touring the world like Jagger & Co, please the crowd and earn big buck. After you reach some age, you can't create a good Rock songs naturally, it's just not possible biologically. Of course, with years, you become a good tradesman so here and there comes a good song out of experience..... But, there is a big problem with creativity....

Keep writing dude, I'm looking forward to see your list, let me guess, at least 80% American stuff I never heard off.... "

 and my reply

"The small willy is my dad’s fault, and unfortunately I’ve passed it on to my 2 sons.
Rock is the best branch of popular music.
I completely agree with the rest of your email."
Before I started this blog i posted the list on fb (dumb dumb dumb) but i got one comment from Kane

"Looks good couldnt see any 'Weezer' and 'the cure' in there, reminds me of Westlake days hooning around in escort / capri listening to most of this on a mix tape....."
whoops, forgot a picture
 Take a hint...
Tonight i'm listening to Savior by Rise Against, one of the best tracks i've heard in a while.

Last time i left a picture that hinted at what i was going to bang on about now, but i think i have changed my mind. i was always going to do the list in order, but now i am not entirely sure whether to go from 1 - 100 or 100 - 1. Probably if i was getting paid to do this then i would have to 'build up' to the number 1. But that's awfully American and while i love the country (esp San Diego) and the rock music (as i write, Dakota by The Stereophonics, a good Welsh band is playing), the 'Americanisation' fucks me off.

I'm convincing myself to start at 1 and work to 100. I can't say 'go down the list' or anything because they are all excellent songs.

But i think i want to bang on about what rock music is. Wikipedia (and I promise never to do this again) says

"
Rock music is a genre of popular music that developed during and after the 1960s, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, itself heavily influenced by rhythm and blues and country music. Rock music also drew strongly on a number of other genres such as blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical sources.
Musically, rock has centred around the electric guitar, usually as part of a rock group with bass guitar and drums. Typically, rock is song-based music with a 4/4 beat utilizing a verse-chorus form, but the genre has become extremely diverse and common musical characteristics are difficult to define. Like pop music, lyrics often stress romantic love but also address a wide variety of other themes that are frequently social or political in emphasis. The dominance of rock by white, male musicians has been seen as one of the key factors shaping the themes explored in rock music. Rock places a higher degree of emphasis on musicianship, live performance, and an ideology of authenticity than pop music.
By the late 1960s a number of distinct rock music sub-genres had emerged, including hybrids like blues rock, folk rock, country rock, and jazz-rock fusion, many of which contributed to the development of psychedelic rock influenced by the counter-cultural psychedelic scene. New genres that emerged from this scene included progressive rock, which extended the artistic elements; glam rock, which highlighted showmanship and visual style, and the diverse and enduring major sub-genre of heavy metal, which emphasized volume, power and speed. In the second half of the 1970s, punk rock both intensified and reacted against some of these trends to produce a raw, energetic form of music characterized by overt political and social critiques. Punk was an influence into the 1980s on the subsequent development of other sub-genres, including New Wave, post-punk and eventually the alternative rock movement. From the 1990s alternative rock began to dominate rock music and break through into the mainstream in the form of grunge, Britpop, and indie rock. Further fusion sub-genres have since emerged, including pop punk, rap rock, and rap metal, as well as conscious attempts to revisit rock's history, including the garage rock/post-punk and synthpop revivals at the beginning of the new millennium.
Rock music has also embodied and served as the vehicle for cultural and social movements, leading to major sub-cultures including mods and rockers in the UK and the "hippie" counterculture that spread out from San Francisco in the US in the 1960s. Similarly, 1970s punk culture spawned the visually distinctive goth and emo subcultures. Inheriting the folk tradition of the protest song, rock music has been associated with political activism as well as changes in social attitudes to race, sex and drug use, and is often seen as an expression of youth revolt against adult consumerism and conformity."

Followed by a whole bunch of historical crap.

The answer is that rock does centre around the electric guitar, but it has to be played to rock (unlike the way i play) You can use an electric guitar to play all sort of gay, happy clappy bollocks.

The vocals in rock - great rock, for me, are important when you feel that that the singer is really meaning it. The bass and other instruments are important for sound and sometimes noise, but they don't need to be noticable. ( i highly recommend listening to What's the Story, Morning Glory? by Oasis and then straight after listen to Lump by The Presidents of the United States of America for an idea of noise)

I enjoy Rock, and it's subsections. There are many, but Soul is not one of them. In researching this blog (research.... Stezzah, you nerd...) I learnt that there are a lot of top 10 or top 100 lists on the net and that RESPECT by Aretha Franklin shows up near the top on a lot. Well there is no Aretha on my list and there are no apologies (sorry, blatent Nirvana reference) for that.

Under rock are things like heavy metal, metal, punk, indie, sca, and things that that. My personal favourite is grunge and if you don't like it, nevermind, i'm mellowship slinky in B Major.

There will be blues, which i feel is a bridge to soul, which is in turn a bridge to R & B, which is turn a bridge to rap and then you get rap rock crossover such as some Faith No More, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys.

It's late, I'm old, the kids are asleep, the blog is long (stoopid wikipedia) and feel i have 20mins to run some people over in GTA SA so I'll say goodbye (Dance Exponents) and leave with this: Tomorrow i will either; start the list or bang on about how rock bands don't always release 'rock' songs and that even Robbie Williams can release a rock song and why this is confusing and annoying to me. Stay in your own genre dammit.

X, by Bailterspace is thumping along merrily as i bugger off.

Wednesday 18 January 2012

So what i'm going to do is post the best rock songs, in order and some info about them and why they on the list. Some people may disagree; good for them, i want criticism (not the 'you've got a small penis' criticism, just about the list)

I'll start over the next little bit and see how I go. I have a reasonable amount to do in my life so it may not be everyday.
