My Rant;
Now, the Clash were a Punk Band, but not really. Unlike other contemporary punk bands, these blokes could actually play, and this song and album show it big time. The other band related comment is the were called ' the only band that matters, and at the time, in punk, they probably were.
With lyrics inspired by a whole host of things, drugs, police and three mile island included, it was as socially relevant and as Smells Like Teen Spirit, but it didn't change the face of pop culture like 'Smells' did.
Still and all, a truly great song that rocks on many levels. the funny thing is that i couldn't tell you exactly why i rate it so highly. Alls i know is that it gets inside me and feels like punk rock (not my favourite rock genre) should feel.
I also know a dude who went to a Clash concert in the early 80's and it was the best concert he's ever been to, he said it was a time and a place that 'clashed' well.
